About senior dog food (7+)

As dogs get older they usually become less active, their metabolism slows and they can start to lose muscle. Senior dog food is designed for this stage, typically with fewer calories to help prevent weight gain, good-quality protein to maintain lean muscle, and in many recipes added nutrients to support joints, digestion and an active mind. Most dogs are considered mature or senior from around 7 years old, although large and giant breeds age sooner and small breeds often later, which is why many senior formulas are split by breed size. When choosing, look at your dog's size, weight and activity level, and whether a dry, wet or mixed diet suits them best, especially if chewing has become harder. The Dog Food App stocks senior and mature dog food from Hill's Science Plan, Royal Canin, Purina Pro Plan, Eukanuba, Acana, Orijen, Montego, Ultra Pet and Olympic. How to choose senior dog food

  • Pick a formula for your dog's size: large and giant breeds are often moved to senior food from about 5 to 6 years, small breeds from about 8 years.
  • Watch body condition: if your dog is gaining weight, choose a lower-calorie senior or light recipe and weigh portions.
  • For stiff joints, look for formulas with added joint support, and keep your dog lean to reduce strain.
  • Wet food or kibble softened with a little warm water can help dogs with dental problems or a reduced appetite.
  • Older dogs should have regular vet check-ups; ask your vet about a prescription diet if your dog has a medical condition.

Senior dog food FAQs

At what age should my dog eat senior food?

Most dogs are considered mature from around 7 years old. Large and giant breeds tend to age sooner and are often switched earlier, while small breeds may only need senior food from about 8 years or later. Your vet can advise based on your dog's health.

What is the difference between senior and adult dog food?

Senior foods are usually lower in calories to match a slower metabolism and lower activity, while still providing good-quality protein to help maintain muscle. Many also include added nutrients to support joints, digestion and brain health.

How do I switch my older dog to a senior food?

Mix the new food into the current one over about 7 days, gradually increasing the amount of new food each day. Older dogs can have more sensitive digestion, so go slowly and speak to your vet if you notice ongoing tummy upsets or weight changes.
