About grain-free dog food

Grain-free dog food leaves out cereals such as wheat, maize, rice, barley and oats, and instead uses ingredients like lentils, peas, chickpeas and pumpkin alongside a high proportion of meat or fish. Many owners choose grain-free for dogs that do well on a higher-protein, meat-rich diet, or for dogs with a known sensitivity to a specific grain. Limited-ingredient grain-free recipes, made with a single animal protein, can also be useful for dogs with diet sensitivities. When choosing, start with your dog's life stage and size, then look at the main protein source, especially if your dog reacts to certain meats. Grain-free is not automatically better for every dog, so if your dog has a medical condition, speak to your vet before changing diet. The Dog Food App stocks grain-free dry dog food from Acana and Orijen, covering puppies, adults, seniors and active dogs. Browse the range below, or see all our dry dog food.

How to choose grain-free dog food

  • Match the recipe to your dog's life stage and size: puppy, adult, senior, small or large breed.
  • If your dog has a food sensitivity, choose a limited-ingredient recipe with a single animal protein.
  • High-protein recipes are often energy-dense, so weigh portions and follow the feeding guide.
  • Change foods gradually over about 7 days to give your dog's digestion time to adjust.
  • Ask your vet before switching if your dog has a heart, kidney or other medical condition.

Grain-free dog food FAQs

Is grain-free food better for my dog?

Not necessarily. Many dogs do very well on diets that include grains. Grain-free food can suit dogs with a specific grain sensitivity or owners who prefer a meat-rich, higher-protein diet. If you are unsure, ask your vet which option suits your dog.

Does grain-free mean carbohydrate-free?

No. Grain-free recipes replace grains with other carbohydrate sources such as lentils, peas, chickpeas or pumpkin. They are free from cereal grains, not from carbohydrates.

How do I switch my dog to grain-free food?

Introduce the new food over about 7 days, mixing increasing amounts into your dog's current food each day. If your dog has ongoing tummy upsets, speak to your vet.
