About kitten food

Kittens do most of their growing in their first year, so they need more energy, protein and key nutrients than an adult cat, in portions small enough for a tiny tummy. Kitten food is formulated for that stage, with balanced minerals for developing bones and teeth, DHA for brain and eye development in many recipes, and a small kibble or soft texture that young cats can manage easily. When choosing, think about your kitten's age, whether it has been sterilised, and whether you want to feed dry, wet or a mix of both. Many owners combine the two: kibble for convenience and dental texture, plus pouches or mousse for extra moisture and variety. ZUKI Pet Shop stocks kitten food from Hill's Science Plan, Royal Canin, Purina Pro Plan, IAMS, Montego and Ultra Pet, including mother-and-kitten formulas and a sterilised kitten option. How to choose kitten food

  • Feed a complete kitten food until about 12 months of age; some large breeds such as Maine Coons mature more slowly.
  • Kittens have small stomachs, so offer several small meals a day rather than one or two big ones.
  • Wet food adds moisture to the diet; if you mix wet and dry, reduce each portion so the total stays within the feeding guide.
  • If your kitten is sterilised early, a sterilised kitten formula helps manage calorie intake.
  • Always have fresh water available, and change foods gradually over about 7 days.

Kitten food FAQs

When should I switch my kitten to adult cat food?

Most kittens can move to adult food at around 12 months. Some large breeds, such as Maine Coons, keep growing for longer, so check with your vet before switching.

Should I feed my kitten wet or dry food?

Both can be complete and balanced. Dry food is convenient and easy to portion, while wet food adds moisture and variety. Many owners feed a mix of the two, adjusting portions so the total daily amount stays within the feeding guide.

Can my kitten eat adult cat food?

It is best not to. Adult cat food is not designed for the higher energy and nutrient needs of a growing kitten. Feed a food labelled for kittens, or for all life stages, until your kitten is fully grown.
